Cement shipments on the up in the US and Puerto Rico

USGS has released its monthly data on the shipments of cement to final customers and the production of clinker in the US from January 2013 through March 2014. Data on the imports of cement and clinker for March 2014 and the year through March were also provided.

In March 2014, total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico stood at 6.1 million t, up by nearly 6% y/y from March 2013. Shipments for the year through March were 15.7 million t, a rise of approximately 3% y/y from the same period in 2013. The leading Portland cement-producing States in March were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama. The leading consuming States were Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Louisiana, which received approximately 45% of the total shipments in March 2014.

Clinker production totalled 5.7 million t in March 2014, remaining fairly similar to the same period a year earlier. Production for the year through March reached 14.3 million t, up by about 4% y/y. The leading clinker-producing States in March were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama.

During the reporting period, masonry cement shipments stood at around 178 000 t, a 9% y/y rise from March 2013. The leading masonry cement-consuming States were Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia. These received around 55% of the total shipments in March.

Imports of cement and clinker totalled 464 000 t in March 2014, a 5% y/y increase compared to March 2013. Imports for the year through March reached 1.26 million t, up slightly from the same period in 2013.
