Holcim Canada builds on strength of volunteering initiatives in 2013

Holcim Canada has continued its volunteer efforts in 2013. After the success of Holcim Ltd’s 2012 ‘Together for Communities’ initiative to celebrate the company’s centenary, Holcim Canada has incorporated the volunteering scheme into its annual CSR programme and daily operations. A diverse range of fundraising and community engagement projects have been carried out in 2013, including collecting items for food banks, removing invasive species on conservation trails and raising money and awareness by taking part in marathons and other sporting activities.

In September, Holcim Mississauga cement plant employees supported the city’s mural campaign by painting murals at the Clarkson Community Centre Skate Park.

“Volunteers are what really make communities and cities thrive and the city of Mississauga highly values the dedication, passion and time that so many of our community and corporate members contribute to our great city. Holcim’s Mississauga (Cement Plant) Team continues to be an exceptional corporate partner with the city of Mississauga and a leader in making meaningful and truly impactful contributions to the community,” said Councillor Pat Mullin, city of Mississauga.

Meanwhile, in Quebec, workers at the Joliette cement plant, Demix Agrégats, Demix Béton and Demix Construction raised CA$34 000 for two organisations in need – La Maison Victor Gadbois and Le Saisonnier. In Quebec, employees at Ogden Point Quarry donated 300 hours of labour to a Habitat for Humanity project in Colborne.

Commenting on Holcim Canada employees’ dedication to the community engagement projects, Ruksana Mirza, VP Sustainable Development at Holcim Canada, stated: “I am inspired to see the many ways in which our employees are giving back to the community. They go well beyond simply showing up – they make their time volunteering a truly great experience for their colleagues and the community members we partner with… and by getting the job done!”
