KHD wins contract to modify a production line at Holcim’s plant in Hagerstown

KHD Humboldt Wedag has signed a contract with Holcim for the modification of the existing production line at its Hagerstown, MD plant. The company will be responsible for the engineering, delivery of equipment and site services. The agreement includes the supplying of a KHD designed pyroprocessing system, and will increase the existing line’s production rate to 2400 tpd.

The project includes the construction of a five-stage single-string KHD LowNOx Preheater over the existing kiln, while the kiln is in operation. The existing six-pier rotary kiln to a two pier kiln will also be modified and a new KHD PYROFLOOR2® clinker cooler will be added. The existing kiln will be cut to achieve a final length of 51 m, resulting in a new, more energy efficient and environmentally friendly pyroprocessing system. This system will be supplied with a new whole tyre handling system and will be capable of co-processing up to approximately 7% of whole tyres as an alternative fuel.

Emissions control is also an important aspect of the new system. KHD will supply a dry lime injection system to reduce SOx emissions, and supply PYROJET LowNOx burners, a PYROCLON® Low NOX calciner with PYROLOOP® and modify the existing SNCR system to control NOX emissions. New dust collectors will also be supplied as part of the new machinery in order to meet particulate emissions requirements.

The project will begin with a modification to the raw material feed system and end with the clinker handling system into to the existing clinker storage hall. The scope consists of all electrical and auxiliary equipment, a new raw material grinding VRM system, coal dosing systems, civil and structural engineering and the supply of structural steel.

The key KHD equipment supplied for the pyroprocessing system includes:

  • A 5-stage single-string KHD Preheater  PR6742/5.
  • A PYROCLON® LowNOX calciner with PYROLOOP®.
  • A KHD PYROFLOOR2® Clinker Cooler PFC2 530.
  • A KHD PRC Roller Crusher PRC 300–3–ES.
  • A KHD PyroJet and PyroBox Burners.
