Whitman-Walker Health wins Slag Cement Association award

Heidelberg Materials is pleased to have supplied slag cement for Whitman-Walker Health (WWH) at St. Elizabeth’s/Max Robinson Centre, a winner in the 2023 Slag Cement in Sustainable Concrete awards in the architectural category.
WWH is a non-profit community centre that provides primary medical care, behavioural health care, dental care, and a range of health-related legal and support services to more than 20 000 individuals and families annually in the greater Washington, DC region. For the WWH facility built on the St. Elizabeth campus, the architect designed a building that blends modern and historical elements.
Slag cement was used at 40 – 50% in footings, strap beams, columns, slab-on-grade, shear walls, foundation walls and other concrete. The use of slag cement lowered carbon emissions and reduced the heat differential, which is especially important during large slab pours as it reduces thermal cracking.
Construction was completed 14 August 2023.
