CarbonCure technology proves a success

Demonstrating an impressive commitment to environmental leadership, Thomas Concrete of Atlanta, Georgia, has announced the implementation of the CarbonCure Ready Mixed Technology through a feature article published in the widely circulated Concrete Products Magazine.

The Concrete Products feature describes how the technical services team at Thomas Concrete has verified that carbon dioxide (CO2) injected into a concrete mix using the CarbonCure technology may be used as a viable strength enhancement. Since February 26, 2016, nearly half of the concrete made at Thomas Concrete’s Doraville plant has been produced using the CarbonCure technology. The technical services team optimised the cementitious material and conducted testing to confirm the performance of the concrete while reducing the overall carbon footprint.

Cement production accounts for 5% of the world’s CO2 greenhouse gas emissions, a fact that motivates sustainability-driven producers like Thomas Concrete to adopt innovative methods to increase the efficiency of their cement usage. By using recycled CO2 to optimise the concrete mix, Thomas Concrete has already reduced the carbon footprint of its products by about 5%. The CO2 gas, which is sourced from the emissions stream of a nearby fertilizer plant,, converts into a mineral and is permanently captured into concrete.

Thomas Concrete’s commitment to sustainability is heavily engrained within the company’s mission and culture. The company is headquartered in Sweden and operates 133 ready mixed plants across Germany, Poland, Norway and the United States. Alan Wessel, CEO of Thomas Concrete’s US operations, oversees 63 plants located throughout Georgia and the Carolinas.

Wessel states, “At Thomas Concrete, we have built a successful company over many decades because we believe that doing the right thing – socially, environmentally and financially – is the right way to do business. We work hard every day to provide the quality products and services that our customers need. Our success is largely attributed to our dedication to our customers, our employees and the communities in which we operate. We are proud of our long-standing commitment to sustainability and social responsibility, and we look forward to strengthening that commitment through our partnership with CarbonCure.”
