CarbonCure get set for a happy new year

After receiving news earlier in December that it is entitled to as much as CA$336 000 in payroll rebates, CarbonCure Technologies is hoping to triple its workforce over the next five years.

The company now has a dozen employees, and in light of the rebate, it is planning to take on a further 24 people.

CarbonCure’s founder and CEO, Robert Niven, said “We’re going into market mode in January.” His hiring plans include bringing in some more senior technical staff immediately, then building the company’s sales and marketing teams. For a company that had only three employees just a year ago, this will be a huge leap forward for CarbonCure. Niven is also looking for new premises to expand into, since the laboratory that the company has occupied for the past four months simply isn’t big enough.

Shaw Group and Air Liquide Canada have worked alongside CarbonCure, helping to develop the curing process, which uses waste CO2 from refineries to reduce steam-curing energy, cement content and greenhouse gas emissions.

The Shaw Group in Lantz; Atlas Block, the leading concrete supplier to the Greater Toronto Area; and Basalite Concrete Products of San Francisco are all employing CarbonCure’s technology in demonstration plants.

The company expects to have 11 plants running by the end of 2013, with a view to attaining geographic coverage across North America. The eight new plants will target key markets such as the New York City and Chicago areas as well as Florida and British Columbia.
