Puerto Rican sales of cement bags fell y/y in April
The Government Development Bank of Puerto Rico has published its Economic Activity Index (GDB-EAI) for April 2014. The Index, which can be used as an indicator for Puerto Rican economic trends, comprises cement sales, gas consumption, electricity generation and total payroll employment. Overall, the GDB-EAI contracted by 1.3% when compared with April 2013, following a fall of 1% in March 2014. In FY14 YTD (July 2013 – April 2014), a drop of 3.3% y/y has been recorded.
Approximately 1.29 million bags of cement were sold in April, down 17.5% y/y. Around 1.359 million bags of cement were sold in March 2014 in Puerto Rico. Sales were down by 14.6% y/y in FY14 YTD.
Elsewhere on the GDB-EAI, electric power generation declined by 2% y/y to 1.7 billion kWh, while preliminary estimates suggest that gasoline consumption increased by 0.8% y/y in April.
