World Cement,
Earlier this year, Lehigh Hanson launched the Foundations of Excellence Award: an internal programme designed to recognise outstanding business performance during 2018 in the categories of Safety & Health and Environmental Performance. The programme reinforces the company’s commitment in each of these areas, by selecting one of its operations in each category for its best practices. Each region nominated sites, and operations were judged in each category by panels comprised of region and functional personnel.
The 2018 Foundations of Excellence Award winner for Environmental Performance is Ocean Concrete’s Granville Island ready-mixed concrete plant in Vancouver, British Colombia. The Granville Island plant is about to celebrate 100 years of operation in a high-visibility area that is known for tourism. Due to the sensitive environmental community impacts of the location, the facility must maintain a strict and proactive environmental programme. Best practices have been continually applied through water management programmes, sanitation, and environmental impact minimisation. These efforts have led to a strong relationship with the public, government, and regulatory agencies. The site has also held a community open house for the last 21 years. Granville Island’s leadership team has developed and fostered a culture of environmental performance and care.
The 2018 Foundations of Excellence winner for Safety & Health is the Lowrys Quarry in McConnell, South Carolina. The Lowrys Quarry displayed an encompassing and integrated Safety & Health culture, led by senior management and embraced at all levels of the facility. Safety & Health initiatives, such as vehicle segregation, clean site/safe site conversations, and ‘stop work and take five’ assessments, have been fully introduced and embedded into daily operations. In addition, Lowrys has an incident record of 12 years without any medical treatment incidents and has had no lost-time incidents or fatalities in the history of Lehigh Hanson ownership.
The runners up for the Safety & Health award were: Pine Ridge Aggregates, Romeo Quarry, and Sanger Aggregates. The runners up for the Environmental Performance Award were: Gainesville Quarry and Tehachapi Cement Plant.
