Napier Port opts for Terex Port Solutions mobile harbour cranes

Terex Port Solutions (TPS) has received another order from Napier Port for two Terex® Gottwald Model 6 mobile harbour cranes in the G HMK 6408 variant. Both cranes are equipped with long tower and have a maximum 100 t lifting capacity, a radius up to 51 m and maximum hoisting speeds of 120 m/min. To improve availability and operational planning, both cranes are equipped with the Crane Data System and Remote Crane Access smart crane features. Napier Port is the second largest export port by tonnage on the North Island of New Zealand and, as a long-term customer of TPS, is already using six mobile harbour cranes from three generations, including two G HMK 6408 cranes. With the new mobile harbour cranes starting commercial operation in November 2015, Napier Port will significantly extend its handling possibilities and capacities for container handling.

Application compatible: high working speeds, impressive lifting capacity curves, high towers

“Our crane fleet must adapt to ever increasing handling volumes and requirements,” explains Garth Cowie, Chief Executive Officer Napier Port. “With the two new cranes, we are improving the availability and application possibilities of our handling equipment. In addition, the high tower variant enables us to accommodate the increasing number of ships with higher container stacks on deck. The cranes from TPS have impressive lifting capacity curves over the entire radius. This facilitates container twin-lift operation for us. We ultimately anticipate additional increases in productivity thanks to the consistently high working speeds. As the Terex Gottwald machines we already work with have shown, TPS has satisfied our requirements in many respects. This is why we have again opted for Terex Gottwald mobile harbour crane technology to upgrade and extend our crane fleet.”

Quay compatible: customer-specific adaptation of chassis and propping system

Like all cranes supplied to Napier Port by TPS, the two new mobile harbour cranes will be delivered with specially adapted chassis to allow for the limited load-bearing capacity of the quay. The chassis of the G HMK 6408 cranes receive an additional eighth axle and increased spacing of the twin axles, according to the layout of the quay, in order to reduce the specific ground load. Rockers on the propping system distribute the load over a larger surface. “With the special design of the chassis, we are once again responding to the special characteristics of the Napier Port quay and reducing its load”, explains Klaus Roehrig, Regional Director Sales & Service Terex Port Solutions.”

More transparent: Crane Data System and Remote Crane Access smart crane features

Like the Model 6 cranes from the existing crane fleet operated by Napier Port, the new cranes also receive the Crane Data System and Remote Crane Access smart crane features. The Crane Data System gives operators access to the production and diagnostics data of all the cranes in the port that are connected to the system – via a web interface that can be operated easily from any internet-enabled computer, tablet PC or smart phone. The terminal managers at Napier Port can therefore receive information about the handling rates of their crane fleet at any time. The technical staff can also promptly inform the customer of diagnostic and fault messages via e-mail. These messages can be simply evaluated using analysis tools in order to subsequently initiate appropriate troubleshooting measures. Should Napier Port require support for fault analysis, service technicians from TPS can access the crane control via Remote Crane Access. This simplifies and accelerates fault analysis and troubleshooting, as service staff do not need to travel to New Zealand.
