CPI Euromix secures greater sustainability with carbon-friendly forestry initiative

CPI EuroMix has advanced its commitment to a sustainable future by supporting the planting of a new forest.

The dry mortar specialist is directly supporting the planting and maintenance of about 30 hectares of woodland with 80 000 trees at Corwar forestry in Dumfries, Scotland. The scheme, operated in conjunction with Potanow Forestry and Tilhill Forestry, is expected to sequester an estimated 5 000 t of carbon over the next 40 years, the equivalent of more than one year of all CPI EuroMix deliveries to customer sites.

Tony O’Sullivan at CPI EuroMix said: “As the UK’s market-leading dry silo mortar manufacturer, we are aware of our responsibility to minimise the impact of our business on the environment. Regrettably, there are currently no readily available low-carbon alternatives for our bulk deliveries to customer sites. However, we recognised that we needed an alternative mitigation strategy – to do nothing was not an option. We believe the Corwar forestry scheme meets those requirements. Such initiatives are essential to achieving a sustainable, low-carbon construction industry in the UK.”

This latest initiative follows on from a switch to 100% renewable electricity sources in 2021 for all CPI locations and proactive engagement with key stakeholders to reduce the carbon impact of manufacturing activities.

The type of trees planted as part of the Corwar forestry programme include Sitka Spruce, Norway Spruce and mixed broadleaves, which provide a valuable habitat for the local wildlife. Its carbon sequestration is monitored and regulated by the Woodland Carbon Code and recorded on the Land Carbon Registry. The scheme itself is approved by the Soil Association.

William Burfitt, Portfolio Asset Manager at Tilhill Forestry, said his company was delighted to be partnering with CPI EuroMix – ‘a company ‘rooted in the construction industry’ – on the Corway plantation project. “We are creating a truly sustainable cycle where a construction company encourages the planting of trees which not only sequester its carbon emissions, it provides the raw materials that we need for future livelihoods,” he said.

Offering a high-grade mortar alongside its exact premixing silo mixing stations, CPI EuroMix ensures that construction projects benefit from quality mortars with high bond and compressive strength, durability and colour.

Tony O’Sullivan said he hoped fellow mortar manufacturers would take advantage of similar offsetting initiatives.

“A World Green Building Council report estimates that building materials and construction account for 11% of global energy-related carbon emissions. Therefore, any contribution individual companies can make to addressing their carbon footprint could make a huge difference in the greater scheme of things. The Corwar forestry scheme represents a significant step on CPI EuroMix’s journey to greater sustainability.”
