Cement industry call for EU to reward best performers

World Cement,
Preceding the Environmental Council, which took place on 26 October, the cement industry requested that Ministers ensure an EU Emission Trading System which incentivises best performers in the cement industry, by providing them with best protection against carbon leakage. Through this, the revised EU-ETS would be turned into an incentivising tool for investment, growth and jobs in Europe, allowing industries to provide innovative solutions.
In the absence of a global level playing field, it has become increasingly important to reward best performers in the industry with a full protection against carbon leakage. This will encourage the industry to invest and grow. In order for this to come to pass however, technical feasibility in setting reduction targets for industry, and access to affordable energy must be at the centre of EU-ETS negotiations.
In view of the Paris COP 21 negotiations, the cement industry also called on EU governments to strive toward a global level playing field for global industries like cement.
