Dr. Ian Skocek, the R&D Program Manager for Carbonation Technologies at Heidelberg Materials is sharing “Circular economy of concrete, cement, and CO2”, explaining technological advances Heidelberg Materials has made to enable the 100 % recycling of concrete by reusing all constituents back in the original materials. The presentation is part of CarbonZero Global Conference and Exhibition that will be held at Pestana Palace Hotel & National Monument Lisbon, on November 10 and 11.

Dr. Jan Skocek is the R&D Program Manager for Carbonation Technologies at Heidelberg Materials Global R&D since 2012. He manages R&D projects on CO2 reduction by concrete recycling, enforced carbonation and CO2 mineralisation. Before joining the industry, he pursued an academic career in the field of material science related to concrete and cement (Copenhagen) and numerical methods and modelling (Prague).

Dr. Ian Skocek : “Advanced concrete recycling and enforced carbonation enable complete circularity of concrete including the process CO2. By means of the energy efficient selective separation, both recycled aggregates and sand can be reused in ready-mix concrete preserving natural materials and shortening transport distances as recycling can be done close to the concrete customers. The fines produced can capture and mineralise CO2 from raw flue gas from cement plant and the carbonated fines can be used in cement production as a highly reactive cementitious material. With our ReConcrete-360° concept, we have proven that concrete has the potential to be the most sustainable building product over its entire life cycle. Circularity of concrete, cement and CO2 is possible now.“

Beatrice Ene, Managing Director and Head of Events, Industry Link: “Heidelberg Materials is one of the world’s largest integrated manufacturers of building materials and solutions, with leading market positions in aggregates, cement, and ready-mixed concrete. As a recognition of the company’s responsibility for the environment and as a forerunner on the path to carbon neutrality, Heidelberg Materials was awarded the German Innovation Award for Climate and Environment (IKU) in the category "Process Innovations for Climate Protection" for its innovative ReConcrete-360° concept.

We are glad to welcome Dr. Ian Skocek to our one-of-a-kind forum which will set itself as a benchmark bringing innovative solutions and trends that are imperative in the decarbonisation of the whole industry.”
