World Cement,
A competition has begun for students with the aim of rewarding originality and innovation in uses of lime in building, construction and civil engineering. The British Lime Association (BLA) is launching the competition. The award recognises the importance of UK lime as a sustainable and essential mineral in building, construction and civil engineering.
Pal Chana, Executive Director MPA, said, “We often don’t realise how essential and versatile lime is as a mineral. Industries and commodities as diverse as construction, steel making, drinking water and even sugar all depend on this critical mineral. It is the oldest man made material and historically, societies have relied heavily on lime to produce many everyday items since the Roman times. Yet, lime frequently remains unseen.”
BLA is inviting UK undergraduates to submit papers or projects on any topic within building, construction and civil engineering that uses lime with a sustainability theme. In particular, papers featuring new, inventive ideas and novel uses of lime are being encouraged.
There will be a cash prize of £1000 for the winning entry presented at an industry dinner later this year. The competition is open until 30 September 2015.
