UK cement industry sustainable development report released

World Cement,

An interim sustainability report covering the UK cement industry’s environmental performance to the end of 2011 has been published. Companies within the cement sector continued to reduce their environmental impact, including decreasing dust, NOx and CO2 emissions. A slight rise in SO2 emissions has been attributed to natural fluctuations in quarried stone geology.

The report follows the 2005 – 2010 Sector Plan agreement with the UK Environment Agency. A new plan is in the pipeline, which will set targets through to 2020.

Dr Pal Chana, Executive Director MPA Cement, stated: “The cement industry has not rested on its laurels during the transition to a new Sector Plan and has continued to drive forward its environmental performance. From a 1998 baseline we have reduced our emissions of oxides of nitrogen by 60%; sulfur dioxide by 84%; and dust by 82%. Carbon dioxide emissions per tonne of cement equivalent are down by 22% over a 1990 baseline [Kyoto Protocol reference period]. Much of this has been achieved at a time when we have faced the most difficult trading conditions since records began in the 1950s. I pay tribute to the ongoing efforts that our members are making”.

Dr Chana went on to explain that a full sustainable development report would be carried out next year, which will include details of future aims and an update on Sector Plan targets.

The UK Cement Industry’s 2011 Sustainable Development Report can be found on the MPA website.
