The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated Heidelberg Materials’ 2050 carbon reduction targets as consistent with the SBTi Corporate Net Zero Standard and in line with a 1.5°C trajectory.

Following a thorough validation procedure, the company’s long-term target has been successfully assessed against the SBTi’s strict criteria: Heidelberg Materials AG has committed to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050. The company has also committed to reduce gross scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 95% per t of cementitious material by 2050 from a 2020 base year , and to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 90% within the same timeframe.

At the beginning of 2023, SBTi had already validated the near-term reduction targets of Heidelberg Materials for 2030: Heidelberg Materials is committed to reduce gross scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 26.7% per t of cementitious material by 2030 from a 2020 base year, and to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services 25% within the same timeframe. The validation of the 2050 targets recognises Heidelberg Materials' commitment to sustainability and reaffirms its pledge to achieve Net Zero.

Heidelberg Materials was the first company in the cement sector to have its then targets endorsed by the SBTi in 2019. The SBTi assesses and validates corporate emission reduction targets against the latest climate science. The SBTi’s Corporate Net-Zero Standard is the world’s only framework for corporate net-zero target setting in line with climate science. It includes the guidance, criteria, and recommendations companies need to set science-based net-zero targets consistent with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C.
