HeidlebergCement and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EBML), Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences, have signed a three-year collaboration agreement to exchange scientific and technical knowledge in areas related to CO2 emissions reduction, avoidance, and recovery.

The two organisations will focus collaboration on the coordination of conferences and workshops that will bring experts to the EMBL’ International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT) from around the world to discuss the research areas. EICAT is located in Heidelberg, a city in the German state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany.

The city of Heidelberg is also home to Germany’s oldest university, as well as the headquarters of HeidelbergCement. The HeidelbergCement Technology Center (HTC) is also locatednearby, in Leimen on the southern outskirts of Heidelberg.

In addition to collaboration on conferences and workshops, meetings will also be held between experts from HeidelbergCement and EMBL to develop ideas, action plans and sustainable business practices. The two organizations will also “explore further areas for mutually beneficial collaborations” during the three-year period, HeidelbergCement said in a press release.

“Climate change in an incredibly pressing issue,” said EMBL Director, Prof. Matthias W. Hentze. “The science underpinning it is complex and we need the best scientists worldwide to put their heads together to look for innovative solutions. Building on our strong network of internationally-leading scientists, EMBL will help facilitate this collaboration and promote discussion between experts.”
