HeidelbergCement’s Lengfurt cement plant receives ‘Platinum’ CSC certification

HeidelbergCement is the first cement manufacturer in Germany to receive the ‘Platinum’ seal of the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) for one of its cement plants (Lengfurt). Nine other cement plants received the ‘Gold’ seal. After the first certification of all plants with ‘Silver’ in 2018, this is a further step towards sustainability for HeidelbergCement in Germany.

Christian Knell, spokesman for the management of HeidelbergCement in Germany: “We are proud that our cement plants in Germany have now received the CSC certification in ‘Gold’ and one of our plants even the highest distinction ‘Platinum’ thanks to the recertification. These certifications are a valuable contribution on the way to achieving the sustainability goals we have set ourselves."

The CSC certificate certifies that the company has managed cement production in an ecologically, socially and economically responsible manner, which also takes into account the entire value chain. The certification takes place in the five categories management, environment, social, economy and product chain. As part of the certification, evaluation points, so-called ‘credits’, are awarded in accordance with these criteria. A maximum of 100% of the credits can be awarded for the cement plant and its supply chain. This overall result is made up of the ‘cement result’ and the contributions from the supply chain.

Dr. Peter Boos, Head of Quality Germany at HeidelbergCement, adds: “A conscious use of natural resources and especially the conscious use of energy is very pronounced in all of our plants. For us, these awards are confirmation that we are living up to our own high expectations of sustainable business practices."

Heidelberger Beton GmbH, a subsidiary of HeidelbergCement AG, was also able to achieve the ‘Platinum’ seal for the first time with two plants. In addition, six concrete plants were recertified with ‘Gold’ and six other plants were also newly certified with the ‘Gold’ seal.

Transparency and recognition by DGNB and BREEAM

The Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) is an international organisation that was initiated by the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) of the World Economic Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) together with the cement and concrete industry. The CSC pursues the goal of further increasing the transparency of sustainable action within the concrete industry. In the future, the sustainability of concrete as a building material is to be emphasised even more. In addition, the CSC certification system has now also been recognised by the internationally known assessment systems for the sustainability of buildings, ‘BREEAM’ (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) and ‘DGNB’ (German Sustainable Building Council), which confirms the robustness and credibility of the CSC Certification system.
