In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Week (10 – 16 May), the Institute of Quarrying (IQ) is reminding members of the mental health and wellbeing support services that are available.

The Coronavirus pandemic is affecting the lives of many. IQ UK, along with its international affiliate offices in Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand and South Africa, has increased awareness of mental health services available. This includes signposting members to expert advisors, providing vital outreach services and producing guidance materials.

James Thorne, IQ UK CEO, says: “In the UK, the Institute of Quarrying has delivered webinars in raising mental health awareness, alongside guidance to help improve sleep and the challenges of isolation and loneliness. Members could access a suite of mental health resources via the IQ Connect app, launched at the outbreak of the pandemic to help members easily access content across a range of topics."

Shane Braddy is IQ International Presidents Chair. He says: “According to the World Health Organisation, COVID-19 has disrupted or halted critical mental health services in 93 percent of countries worldwide. The international IQ network has witnessed how the pandemic has affected the mental health of people in their own countries. We want to remind members of the ongoing programme of support available from your affiliate IQ in times of difficulty.”

“A strategic objective of the international IQ network is to support the sector in working towards a healthier and safer industry. Mental health is a priority area of concern for our members and will continue to be our focus. The strength of the Institutes working together, sharing experiences and knowledge in this challenging period demonstrates the value that we bring to our members and the quarrying community globally.”

Mental health and wellbeing support services are available through:

  • Mates in Mind
