World Cement,
On 12 February, the Siemens Drive Technologies Division held a webcast discussing global challenges facing the cement industry and Siemens solutions. The main topic on the table was energy efficiency, and Dieter Schletterer, Vice President – Cement and Minerals, ran through several case studies demonstrating projects in Southeast Asia where the introduction of energy efficient motors, variable-speed drives and optimised technologies has reduced energy consumption. Dieter Schletterer said that Southeast Asia is a real ‘hotspot’ for Siemens, which also has projects in other emerging markets such as Brazil, Colombia, Ghana and Benin, as well as continuous business in India and China.
Mr Schletterer talked of the possible energy savings that can be achieved with Siemens technology. For example, a savings of up to 40% power loss by utilising energy-efficient Siemens motors and a 70% saving by using variable-speed drives using frequency converters. We asked whether there could be a sectoral approach to energy efficiency and Mr Schletterer answered that there is a basis to tackle energy efficiency globally, but Siemens is mindful of local requirements, which is why it has people on the ground around the world, so that it can ‘think global, act local’.
