World’s most powerful mill for Holcim in Brazil

Siemens and Gebr. Pfeiffer are working together on a project to equip Holcim (Brasil) with the most powerful vertical roller mill of its kind in the world today. The Siemens Drive Technologies Division has developed a new drive system as part of a joint project with Gebr. Pfeiffer SE.

Siemens is supplying six 1920 kW drive modules for the modular and redundant drive system of this 11 500 kW mill with a capacity of 450 tph. In addition, the company is also supplying all components of the drive train, including gear unit, coupling and oil supply system, electric motors and frequency converters. Because the drive systems are mounted on carriages, they can be replaced quickly when maintenance is required. Furthermore, the radial arrangement of the drive units around the grinding table bearings offers protection against grinding forces. The frequency converter allows variable speed adjustment and thus flexible adaptation of the milling process to suit the requirements of different input materials, making it possible to optimise throughput or energy efficiency. For example, higher output drive modules can be installed for an overall power rating of up to 16 500 kW – more than double the previous limit attainable by conventional plants of 8000 kW.

Siemens and Gebr. Pfeiffer have previously worked together on VRMs featuring multi-drive systems in France, India and Australia. This experience was brought to the Holcim project for the Barroso plant in Minas Gerais.
