Cemex surpasses one million zero waste cement bags sold in the Balearic Islands

World Cement,

Cemex has sold over one million zero waste cement bags in the Balearic Islands, Spain, marking an important milestone that reinforces its commitment to the circular economy and reducing its carbon footprint in the construction sector.

Introduced to local markets in late 2023, these innovative bags are designed to dissolve completely during the mixing process, without generating waste or affecting the technical performance of the cement. This solution has helped prevent over one million bags from being treated or disposed of in landfill so far, while enabling safer, more efficient, and more sustainable site management.

The Balearics are a region of significant environmental value, containing unique and fragile ecosystems. With waste management presenting challenges on the islands, Cemex developed its zero waste bags to provide a circular and responsible solution that addresses these long-standing issues. Yago Castro Izaguirre, Commercial and Supply Chain Vice-President for Cemex Europe commented: “The Zero Waste cement bags reflect Cemex’s commitment to innovation that drives measurable environmental benefits. It’s a clear example of how our Future in Action strategy is delivering lower-carbon, circular solutions to the market”.

The zero waste bags exclusively contain Cemex’s Vertua® Supremo cements, which offer at least a 55% reduction in carbon emissions* compared to conventional cements. The development of lower-carbon products and solutions forms a core part of the company’s Future in Action strategy, its roadmap for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Cemex R&D, Innovation and Business Development projects are part of the global R&D collaboration network, headed by CEMEX Research Centers, based in Switzerland.
