Tarmac plays an active role

Tarmac has highlighted the benefits that greater collaborative working can bring at an industry event designed to share insights on infrastructure and greater industry productivity.

The event, which was hosted by Tarmac for the Whitehall and Industry Group (WIG), brought together leaders from over 70 organisations to discuss the future of the infrastructure sector, along with the opportunities and challenges it faces.

The event’s keynote speaker was Philip Graham, CEO of the National Infrastructure Commission, who outlined his strategy and the importance of taking a more long term, integrated approach to deliver the UK’s infrastructure needs.

Welcoming attendees, Jeremy Greenwood, Managing Director of Tarmac’s Readymix business, focused on the role of collaboration. Citing figures from the recent Tarmac Infrastructure Outlook Report, he highlighted how 78% of decision makers in the construction industry agree that infrastructure projects will take less time to deliver if there is greater collaboration across supply chains. He added: “If we combine our expertise, share ideas and do so upfront, the feeling is that our infrastructure challenge becomes more deliverable both in terms of time and money.”

Tarmac is playing an active role in delivering the UK’s future infrastructure including thestrategic roads programme. Initiatives such as Northern Powerhouse, HS2 and a possible Crossrail 2 were described by Jeremy as “a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make fundamental, lasting and positive changes to our infrastructure” provided they are approached in the right way.

The interest in the discussion from a wide range of players indicated the importance of cross-sector collaboration in helping to promote effective infrastructure delivery.
