Tarmac gains extension on highway maintenance contract

After securing the annual £12 million highways maintenance contract with Nottinghamshire County Council in April 2013, Tarmac has been awarded a two year extension.

The contract was originally for an initial period of five years, but Tarmac has been awarded the first extension to April 2020, with the possibility of further extensions to March 2023, following the successful delivery of a number of significant projects. The extension will see the company deliver a range of highway maintenance works, including road surfacing, gully cleaning, street lighting, road marking and earthworks. The contract also includes a commitment from Tarmac to support and invest in the local economy by primarily using local workforce and suppliers.

Since the partnership between Tarmac and the County Council began in 2013, it has delivered over £2 million in annual cost savings, which has been reinvested in other local road improvement initiatives, and has also helped secure jobs and deliver joint training and development initiatives in the local area. Tarmac has also employed two apprentices from the local area, creating opportunities for younger people to gain permanent employment.Commenting on the award, Paul Fleetham, managing director of Tarmac’s Contracting business, said: “We’re delighted to have secured this extension to our contract with Nottinghamshire County Council.
