Voss Award presented to senior concrete petrographer

Bernard Erlin, senior concrete petrographer and founder of The Erlin Co., Acme, Pa., has received the Walter C. Voss Award from ASTM International. The Voss Award is presented annually to an engineer or scientist who has made notable contributions in the field of building technology.

Erlin received the Voss Award in recognition of “outstanding contributions in advancing the state of knowledge in the petrographic examination and analysis of construction materials.”

An ASTM International member for nearly 50 years, Erlin’s specialties include the development and application of petrographic techniques, as well as developing new and improving existing methods for evaluating the composition and performance of a wide variety of construction materials. The results of his work have contributed greatly to knowledge related to the evaluation of construction materials, both within the engineering community and through the development of new standards in ASTM and the American Concrete Institute.

Erlin is an honorary member of ASTM Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates and also serves on Committees C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry, C18 on Dimension Stone and E30 on Forensic Sciences. He has chaired several subcommittees and received the C09 Award of Appreciation in 2004.
