The US division of Cemex has announced it will provide approximately 250 000 yd3 of ready-mix concrete for the more than US$1 billion Port of Miami project in south Florida. The new Port of Miami Tunnel will provide a direct connection from the Port of Miami through Watson Island to Dodge Island. The tunnel will maintain the competitive position of the Port of Miami, the county’s second largest economic generator, and reduce traffic congestion, making downtown streets safer.
Cemex will supply approximately 250 000 yd3 of concrete for the entire project, of that, 80 000 yd3 of concrete will be used for the 12 000 segments of tunnel lining. The company will also provide concrete for the underwater floor inside the shaft for the four-story-high tunnel-boring machine. This concrete must be poured underwater so the machine can be assembled in place and dig the tunnel, while the segments that will make up the tunnel are installed. This process will take place at both the entrance and exit of the tunnel.
As a global leader in the building materials industry, Cemex is well poised to tailors its products and services to solve its clients’ building challenges.
