Geocycle & Amocali sign alliance to double recovery of agrochemical packaging

Within the framework of the National Strategy for the Management of Empty Pesticide Containers promoted by the Mexican government, Geocycle de Holcim Mexico and Amocali A.C. formalised a strategic alliance to double the capacity to manage agrochemical waste in the country, reducing pollution and health risks associated with the improper management of these wastes.

Currently, the national agricultural industry only manages to recover 51 out of every 100 containers used. Through this technological and territorial expansion, it seeks to drastically increase the recovery rate and give a safe destination to this waste considered hazardous due to its potential for poisoning and environmental damage.

Through this agreement, both entities will implement a comprehensive collection and co-processing system to reach 2600 tons per year of empty containers with triple washing, mitigating the risks of contamination in soils and groundwater, and contributing directly to the sanitation of the most affected rivers in the Mexican Republic.

In Mexico, this alliance will allow efforts to be focused on three basins in the country: Lerma-Santiago, Atoyac and Tula, as well as in Campeche, protecting ecosystems and the population, contributing to commitment 92 of the current presidential term (2024 – 2030): The cleaning and sanitation of the 3 most polluted rivers in the country.

Geocycle's model transforms this waste into a resource for construction. After the triple washing process in the field, Geocycle receives the empty agrochemical containers, crushes them and formulates them together with other waste to safely integrate them into the manufacture of cement. This synergy prevents them from ending up abandoned in the fields or saturating landfills, thus preventing the contamination of local ecosystems.

"The alliance with Amocali not only allows us to decentralise the technological solution in our seven platforms in the country to provide total coverage, but also has a direct impact on the health of agricultural communities and the preservation of critical watersheds. By integrating these plastics into the co-processing process in cement plants, we demonstrate that industrial symbiosis is a real driver of environmental change and decarbonisation for the construction sector in Mexico," said Oscar Rivas, Director of Geocycle at Holcim Mexico.

Geocycle and Amocali strengthen the circular economy and reaffirm the commitment to work for a clean countryside in Mexico.
