World Cement,
On 7 September, Essroc Italcementi received its first import of Portland cement since the economic downturn began in 2007. The imported cement was produced at Italcementi’s Devnya plant in Bulgaria and received at the US Port of Newport News, Virginia, which serves Essroc’s Mid-Atlantic market.
“The import of cement from Devnya demonstrates the measurable recovery of the North American construction market,” said Alex Car, Essroc President and CEO. “We continue to operate in a near sold-out environment. The additional supply of Portland cement from our sister company will allow Essroc to fulfil the needs of our customers and grow our share of the cement market.”
The shipment totalled 25 000 t and will augment customers currently served by the Martinsburg plant in West Virginia. The Devnya plant is one of the most modern facilities in the Italcementi network, having only recently been completed. Car added that the company anticipates placing additional orders in the foreseeable future due to strong forecasted demand and to ensure an uninterrupted supply. He said that this ‘major commitment…validates the robust construction and economic recovery of the US market’.
