Lafarge Canada Inc. goes green

World Cement,

Lafarge Canada Inc.’s Brookfield, Nova Scotia cement plant, a subsidiary of Lafarge North America, will begin to develop a new type of blended cement that is expected to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by up to 76 000 t by 2015.

Lafarge will reduce emissions at its Brookfield plant by decreasing the usage rate of clinker by over 20% and replace it with alternate materials of equal performance.

“Blended cement is not a new idea, but the fact that the quality of this cement is equivalent to our normal product is revolutionary,” said Scarth MacDonnell, Plant Manager of the Lafarge Brookfield Plant. “This project delivers considerable CO2 emission reductions that are substantial and near-term, and it also stands to affect industry standards and markets across Canada.”

At today’s announcement the Honourable Darrell Dexter, Premier of Nova Scotia, announced that ecoNovaScotia’s Environment Technology Program (ETP) will provide a $670 000 grant to assist Lafarge in producing the new blended cement.  Total cost of the project will be over $1.5 million and includes installing additional material storage and handling equipment required for manufacturing the new product.

"Investing in a greener economy is the right decision for Nova Scotia, and for the entire Atlantic region, as climate change is an issue that affects all of us,” said Premier Dexter. “This government is showing genuine leadership by supporting the development of leading edge technologies, such as those at Lafarge in Brookfield, which are good for the environment, and good for Nova Scotia’s economy.”

“The ecoNovaScotia program represents a dynamic partnership between government and industry,” said MacDonnell. “The ETP grant allows us to move forward on a project to install new equipment to continue to make top quality cement using fewer raw materials and reducing fossil fuel demands. This initiative extends the life of the Brookfield quarry, reduces fossil fuel consumption and significantly reduces overall CO2 emissions.”

ecoNovaScotia’s grant recognises the innovative nature of this project and highlights Lafarge’s desire to constantly search for new ways to reduce their carbon footprint. The reduction of emissions by 76 000 tpa is the equivalent of planting 375 000 trees.

Lafarge Brookfield’s goal is to convert 100% of their current General Use (GU) cement into blended cement types, reducing province-wide CO2 emissions. This project represents the first steps towards reducing emissions locally, and ultimately, setting a new standard for other jurisdictions on the path towards environmental sustainability.
