NSSGA urges members to support WRDA

The bipartisan Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) has stalled in Congress and will not pass unless grassroots action puts pressure on the Senate to move the bill. The NSSGA is urging its members to contact their members of Congress and ask them to support a WRDA bill before the July recess.

WRDA funding addresses the needs of America’s dams, locks, flood protection and other water resources infrastructure. These all require aggregates. S. 2848 was approved by the Senate Environmental and Public Works Committee on 28 April, but neither the full House nor Senate have approved a final bill. Time is running out to vote on the bill before Congress breaks for summer.

WRDA also authorises projects and activities related to the key missions of the US Army Corps of Engineers. The US House of Representatives’ WRDA reauthorisation bill approves 28 new Corps projects. Completing a WRDA this year would help Congress return to a two-year cycle for WRDA bills, thereby ensuring regular consideration of the needs of the nation’s water infrastructure, for which NSSGA members supply the essential base materials.

“This act is important to our industry because our materials not only build water infrastructure, but our operations use that very infrastructure to transport materials,” said Pam Whitted, NSSGA senior vice president of government and regulatory affairs. “We urge the entire aggregates industry to reach out to their senators immediately. Let them know that the aggregates industry supports S. 2848 and it should be brought up for a vote before the summer recess.”
