Local press sources have reported that the Caribbean Cement Company has shipped its first load of clinker to Venezuela under the PetroCaribe agreement, a trade mechanism that sees Jamaica exchanging goods and services in return for Venezuelan oil.
The clinker trade deal has been in the works for a while, with the Jamaican Cabinet signing off the supply agreement in November. However, the agreement was delayed pending the relevant approvals from Venezuela.
Caribbean Cement’s parent company Trinidad Cement Ltd stated in its financial report ending 30 June 2013 that it would ship around 200 000 t of clinker under the trade mechanism.
