CalPortland has announced that three of its ready mix concrete plants have achieved the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry. Having worked diligently to reduce their respective energy intensities, the facilities have exceeded the minimum energy reduction requirement of 10% that was established by the programme.
The three plants are El Segundo in California, Longview in Washington, and Woodland in Washington.
The El Segundo plant reduced its energy intensity by 35%, with an avoided carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) of 104 metric tpy. This was achieved through a lighting upgrade to LED lights throughout the entire facility.
The Longview plant reduced its energy intensity by 25.9%, with an avoided CO2e of 190 metric tpy. This was achieved through the installation of a hot water holding tank, which cut down diesel consumption for boiler operation by 25% to 50%, as well as a full LED lighting upgrade.
The Woodland plant reduced its energy intensity by 34.7%, with an avoided CO2e of 119 metric tpy. This was achieved through an upgrade to LED lighting, as well as an upgraded heat pump system from a natural gas furnace.
“Achieving the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry continues to demonstrate CalPortland’s commitment to strong energy management practices that produce results for the environment and the community,” said Allen Hamblen, President and CEO of CalPortland.
The ENERGY STAR Challenge encourages manufacturing sites to set a goal to reduce energy intensity by 10% within 5 years. ENERGY STAR is a government-backed symbol for energy efficiency, providing simple, credible, and unbiased information that consumers and businesses rely on to make well-informed decisions.
CalPortland is a major producer of cement, ready mix concrete, aggregates, concrete products, and asphalt in the western US and Canada.
