CalPortland concrete mixer trucks selected as a Top 25 for Green Fleets 2018

Catalina Pacific®, a CalPortland Company, has been selected by Heavy Duty Trucking (HDT) as one of the Top 25 Green Fleets for 2018 in the US. The company commissioned 118 ‘near-zero emission,’ compressed natural gas (CNG)/renewable natural gas (RNG) powered concrete mixer trucks, which were placed in operation in 4Q17.
HDT has indicated in its November 2018 journal that, for inclusion into the Top 25 Green Fleet class, it looks for long-term dedication to sustainability, as well as paying close attention to new initiatives. In addition to this, HDT looks for companies that are leaders in their industries, promoting fuel efficiencies and alternative fuels, while also testing new technologies.
The company has stated that Catalina Pacific is firmly on the Road to Zero (emissions), through the implementation of the latest in clean engine technology. Powered by the ISL G Near Zero Cummins Westport 9L engine, Kenworth’s T880S mixers reduce greenhouse gases by 15% and NOX emissions by 90%. These figures are compared to a 2010 diesel engine. The engine is also compatible with RNG, which is noticeably quieter than a diesel engine and allows for further reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
Due to an optimised set-forward axle layout and a reduced emissions engine, the company has also stated that the Kenworth engine offers excellent payload capacity and manoeuvrability. CNG/RNG also has various advantages over conventional diesel fuel, making it Catalina Pacific’s choice for its ready mix truck fleet.
To provide the 10.5 yd Bridgemaster Transit mixer body and the NGENTM twin vertical compressed natural gas system for the T880S, Kenworth partnered with McNeils. These elements offer enhanced high capacity and low profile back-of-cab configuration for the mixers.
The ‘clean fleet’ vehicles refuel at company-owned CNG/RNG stations, which were built by OZINGA ENERGY®. They also utilise RedeemTM by Clean Energy®, a RNG fuel that is made entirely from organic waste. The fuel is derived from biogenic methane, which is naturally generated by the decomposition of organic waste at landfills and agricultural waste sources. Catalina Pacific is building privately-owned fueling stations at two plant locations.
CalPortland has also this year been presented the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2018 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award. This is the company’s fourteenth consecutive year of recognition from the EPA ENERGY STAR award, which is unmatched by any other US industrial company. The company has stated that it is continuing to identify opportunities to expand the use of alternative clean fuels and optimise efficiency through its energy management programme.
