US cement company Essroc, part of the Italcementi group, held an open day at its Picton, Ontario plant on 3 October. More than 650 people attended to learn about the business, the cement manufacturing process and the company’s plans for the future. A guided bus tour was on offer, as well as exhibits, presentations and a display of several large pieces of equipment, as well as a barbeque picnic.

“Over the years, Essroc’s Picton plant has a history of involvement in activities to support the local community and its residents”, said Jeremy Black, Picton’s plant director. “Essroc has donated resources to a number of community initiatives. Whether it’s sponsoring local youth sports teams or donation of materials to assist in building the new hockey arena, Essroc makes an effort to give back to the community.”

The Picton plant opened in 1958 and is strategically located on Lake Ontario, allowing transport to several Essroc terminals.

Meanwhile, on 26 September, more than 200 Essroc employees joined to support the 25th anniversary of the Bethlehem, PA, Rotary Celtic Classic, a 5 or 10 km charity race. “The race is just one of the many initiatives Essroc promotes to improve our employees well-being,” said Craig Becker, Essroc’s senior vice president of human resources. “A healthy lifestyle is a choice. Essroc provides access to events and information in hopes of encouraging better habits of our personnel.” Earlier in September, Essroc conducted its annual Safety & Health Fair at its corporate headquarters in Bath, PA. The event consisted of multiple vendors whose primary purpose was to educate Essroc’s staff on the importance and benefits of making healthier lifestyle choices. In addition, employees had the ability to receive cardiovascular screenings, flu vaccinations, and blood work analyses, all at zero cost to the employees. “At Essroc, health prevention strategies are a main priority. That is why we reward employees a 30% reduction in health care premiums upon completion of our Healthy Rewards program,” said Becker. Up next for Essroc, a company-wide “Get Moving” challenge running now through the end of November. Cross-functional teams compete, earning points for exercise and various activities designed to encourage getting fit and team collaboration.
