Cement shipments up 5% in August 2013 in the US and Puerto Rico
The USGS has released its Mineral Industry Survey for cement in August 2013. Shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico increased by 5% y/y to 8.6 million t. The biggest cement producing states were Missouri, Texas, California, Michigan and Florida. Together these states accounted for 43% of Portland cement shipments in August. Texas, California and Florida were the top three consumer states. In January – August 2013, shipment reached 53.7 million t, a slight improvement on the same period in 2012.
Meanwhile, clinker production grew 13% y/y to 6.6 million t in August. Production levels for the first eight months of the year were up approximately 3% y/y, coming in at 45.2 million t. California, Texas, Missouri, Florida and Pennsylvania were the principle clinker producing states in August 2013.
Shipments of masonry cement also experienced growth, rising by 7% y/y in August alone and by 6% y/y in January – August 2013.
