Cemex Aggregates has signed a new decade-long deal with the Port of Redwood City, California, continuing its presence at the port that has seen the company import nearly 4 million t of building materials over the last three years. The new lease covers an 8.2 acre marine terminal at the port and comes with the option to extend for an additional 10 years.

Cemex imports building materials from Canada to supply to the local construction market in Redwood City and Silicon Valley. Aggregates are shipped to the port Canadian Steamship Lines in self-unloading bulk carriers. Cemex also has the capability to use docks at the port to import cement.

“The high quality of the sand and gravel aggregates from British Columbia, combined with the dwindling supply of these materials in northern California, have triggered and sustained strong demand,” said Port of Redwood City Executive Director, Michael J. Giari.

Redwood City has more than 1600 new housing units either recently completed or under construction, with about 1300 approved or well through the approvals process. Over a million square feet of commercial space is also under construction or recently completed.

The aggregates imported into Redwood City are sourced from Eagle Rock Aggregates’ Orca quarry on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island. Eagle Rock Aggregates, a subsidiary of Polaris Materials, supplies Cemex in northern California under an aggregates supply and distribution agreement with an initial term expiring in September 2027.

Under the terms of the new lease, Cemex is required to relocate a new and/or upgraded hopper and enclosed conveyor system to the port’s new wharves 1 and 2 by the end of June 2018.
