Grant awarded to rebuild Knoxville runway

The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority will be able to rebuild a 9000 ft runway at McGhee Tyson Airport and extend it another 1000 ft thanks to a $27.9 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The grant allows the airport authority to complete the next phase of a multiyear runway expansion in addition to repaving or rebuilding more than 90% of the airport’s paved surfaces. The work is intended to bring the airport into compliance with updated federal regulations.
“Transportation infrastructure is more than just highways and bridges. Airports are integral to the movement of goods and people and these projects are a solid market for aggregates producers around the country. Any money for transportation projects helps the aggregates industry,” said Michele Stanley, NSSGA director of government affairs.
Projects like these enable airports to modernise their airfields to better serve their customers that consist of airlines, the military and general aviation. The runway expansion is scheduled to reopen in 2019. As more grants are awarded throughout the year, more opportunities will arise for the aggregates industry.
