Domestic cement sales rise in Brazil
Preliminary results from SNIC reveal that domestic cement sales reached 6.5 million t in October. This is 4.7% higher than in the corresponding month last year, when sales came in at 6.2 million. In January – October 2013, sales were up 2.4% y/y to 58.9 million t.
Cement produced in the centre/west of Brazil achieved the largest growth in October, rising by 8.6% y/y. All regions experienced a rise in sales apart from the north. Cement originating from this region dropped by 0.8% y/y.
Meanwhile, Diário do Nordeste has reported that the first phase of construction of Cimento Apodi’s new cement plant in Bonsucesso, Quixeré, has almost reached conclusion. The plant is expected to begin operating in December 2013, with a cement production capacity of 1800 tpd. The second phase of the project, which is likely to be finished in 2H14, will see the plant’s capacity increase to 4000 tpd. The new cement plant will help to meet demand in the State of Ceará.
