Roanoke Cement Company recognised for 50 years of safety

World Cement,

Five cement terminals owned by Roanoke Cement Company (RCC), a subsidiary of Titan America LLC, were honoured last week for reaching a combined 50 years without a lost time accident. The recognised RCC terminals are in the following locations in the USA: Castle Hayne and Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and Front Royal, Norfolk and Richmond, Virginia.

"Safety is one of our core values," said Sam Giles, Safety Manager. "Our terminals' achieving a cumulative 50+ years with no lost time accidents demonstrates that our philosophy is more than a collection of words; it shows the accomplishment reflects a true charge of the organisation."

RCC terminal operations have leveraged their exemplary performance by moving towards partnering with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the Federal Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) and on the state level in North Carolina in the Carolina Star Program, sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Division (OSHNC). Each programme recognises worksites that are self-sufficient in their ability to control hazards and improve safety beyond just compliance. In both programmes, companies have frequent opportunities to provide state and federal agencies with input on safety and health matters and can serve as models in their industries.

"Each manager and employee at the terminals embraces this process with enthusiasm," says Giles. "The terminals have a great achievement behind them, but demonstrate the values of safety and continuous improvement every day at their operations. The employees have a lot to be proud of."
