US cement shipments up 4% in January – November 2013

The USGS has released its Mineral Industry Survey for the US cement industry in November 2013.

In November 2013, total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico stood at 6.56 million t, down slightly from the level in November 2012. However, shipments for the January – November 2013 period increased by around 4% y/y to 76.9 million t. The leading Portland cement-producing States in November were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida, and Pennsylvania, and these accounted for about 44% of the total shipments for the month. The leading consuming States were Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois, which received some 37% of the total shipments in November 2013.

Clinker production rose by almost 10% y/y to approximately 6.5 million t in November 2013, compared to the same month a year earlier. Production for the January – November 2013 period was 64.7 million t, an increase of around 4% y/y. The leading clinker-producing States in November 2013 were Missouri, California, Texas, Florida, and Pennsylvania, accounting for some 46% of the monthly total.

Shipments of masonry cement totalled 169 000 t in November 2013, a 4% y/y increase compared to November 2012. Shipments from January – November 2013 rose by 8% y/y to 1.95 million t. The leading masonry cement-consuming States were Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia, receiving approximately 48% of the total monthly shipments.
