Domestic cement consumption rises y/y but falls m/m in Argentina
Argentine sales of Portland cement fell by 7.8% m/m in November 2013. Total sales volumes including exports came in at 1.06 million t during the month. However, the dispatch figure does represent an increase of 8.1% when compared to sales volumes in November 2012. Local Argentine press have reported a meeting between Loma Negra’s Osvaldo Schütz and Jorge Mayoral, Secretary of the Mining Ministry and Federal Planning, after which it was confirmed that plans to build a new cement plant in San Juan are on track. The new facility will generate both direct and indirect jobs in the region, with construction expected to be completed by the end of 2014. The plant will have a capacity of 2000 tpd, helping the company to increase its total production capacity by 8.5%.
Cement production in Argentina is estimated to reach around 12 million t in 2013, growing 11% y/y.
