Holcim Ecuador inaugurates phase II of the Guayaquil modernisation project

World Cement,

Holcim Ecuador has inaugurated the second phase of its modernisation project at the Guayaquil cement plant. The project enables Holcim to produce 4500 tpd of clinker at the plant. This replaces the need for imports and increases Holcim’s cement production capacity in the country. Approximately US$400 million has been invested in the modernisation work in the last 5 years.

The project has included a particular focus on limiting the facility’s environmental impact. Around 20% of investment in the plant has been spent on environmental control equipment. In addition, the new clinker line will help Holcim Ecuador to reduce its CO2 emissions by 700 000 t.

Over the last 28 months, around 49 000 hours of safety training has been undertaken by staff in order to ensure the highest standards of occupational health and safety at the site. The project has also provided employees with the opportunity to further develop their skills and leadership qualities, whilst sharing knowledge of the latest construction techniques.

Throughout the various stages of the project, Holcim Ecuador notes that it has maintained a constant dialogue with local communities around the Guayaquil plant.
