Size of container ships continue to grow

Published by , Editor
World Cement,

The size of containerships has rapidly growing in the last couple of years with new ships being built in the league of 18 000 - 20 000 TEU.

Although it is less than ten years since the first containership above 10 000 TEU hit the market there are now more than 323 in service and another 190 on order. The growing size of container ships poses not only great opportunities in the industry but also new challenges.

Chief Shipping Analyst at BIMCO, Peter Sand, will be one of the panellists on the ‘Economies of Scale’ segment, discussing the impact of ultra large containerships. The discussion will address the impact the larger ships will have in a market with oversupply and low demand. As well as touch on topics like "have ship sizes peaked?" and "how are the ports reacting to the increasing sizes". Joining Peter Sand on the panel is Managing Director at China Shipping Agency (Germany), Niels Harnack and Head of Business Development at Port of Antwerp, Wim Dillen.

The conference is a gathering of both strategic and technical industry players and will explore consolidation, collaboration and the future of container shipping, focusing on topics like:

  1. Alliances revisited - have they had a positive or negative impact on the industry?
  2. Freight rate forum – can a new pricing model be found?
  3. Shippers’ wish list – what makes a shipper choose one carrier over another?
  4. Economies of scale: ultra large containerships – is bigger better?
  5. Spotlight on UK port development: the North/South divide.
  6. Battle of the Canals: Panama versus Suez.
