Teamwork Makes The Green Dream Work

Elena Soffiato, Mondi, explains how advances in bag testing and design, along with collaboration between partners, will result in a greener construction industry.

The construction sector is busier than ever, despite the challenges it has faced over the last few years. The Global Construction 2030 study forecasts that output will increase in volume by 85% over the next seven years, growing into a US$15.5 trillion industry. This is fantastic news – but with growth comes responsibility. Construction is not just about delivering attractive, functional, and strong structures. It is also more than providing good employment practices and training future workers in a healthy way. To continue to compete, construction businesses must also have a genuine focus on sustainability.

That focus must be in every element of the business model. Investment in technology must be prioritised, contract efficiency must be improved, waste disposal streamlined, and logistics processes should be as environmentally friendly as possible. But this also puts the onus on suppliers. Construction businesses cannot work alone. To be part of a sustainable construction industry and help it continue to improve its environmental credentials, companies need to be using renewable and recyclable resources and materials – and working with companies whose sustainability goals are aligned.

It means those suppliers must become partners, not remote companies providing one product or service within a larger system. Suppliers and customers need to work together to create solutions that help contribute towards more environmentally friendly alternatives to previous practices. The entire value chain needs to collaborate to achieve joint sustainability goals. Suppliers therefore need to offer a genuinely customer-centric approach, evaluating the customer’s needs, meeting their values, and agreeing on a joint approach that will deliver from start to finish – and beyond.

This is where companies such as Mondi have a role to play. The company’s goal is to make its solutions more sustainable, supporting customers at every stage in the packaging process. This is shown in Mondi’s EcoSolutions approach, which follows the motto: ‘paper where possible, plastic when useful’. In the end, it all comes down to collaboration – working in partnership.

A seamless system

Companies in the construction sector want the most efficient delivery process possible – time is money. For this to happen, there needs to be complete integration between the bag manufacturer, the filling machines, and filling lines. Only when that is achieved, can the process of filling cement bags be efficient and sustainable. Mondi’s integrated value chain makes this possible.

When working with the construction sector, Mondi utilises one of its paper bag subsidiaries: Natro-Tech, whose machines and filling equipment complement sustainable paper industrial bags. The equipment is specifically created for industrial paper valve bags and big bags, and is mainly focused on building materials. Through close collaboration, the subsidiary provides machines that optimise the filling process of Mondi Paper Bags. The focus is very much on keeping new products running on existing machinery, as opposed to always creating new systems from scratch. Bringing expertise together ultimately makes the whole process much more cost-effective for the customer. Asking the right questions from the start means that the right tools and the best possible knowledge are applied and that the correct options are already in place before starting. This is a prerequisite for achieving client goals.
