Nord Drivesystems is showcasing smart control solutions for synchronous and induction motors at the 2015 SPS IPC Drives exhibition in Nuremberg. The SK 200E frequency inverter series is a centrepiece of the presentation, featuring an integrated positioning function, the highest overload capability and broadest performance range (0.25 kW to 22 kW. One prominently placed exhibit demonstrates their flexibility, especially in large-scale installations with a centralised automation concept: normally controlled via fieldbus or Industrial Ethernet, they can be instantly disconnected via a switch, e.g. for maintenance purposes. The inverter-integrated PLC then takes over and executes tasks like positioning. In case of an unintentional, sudden disruption of communication with a higher-level control system, an SK 200E is able to keep crucial process stages running in order to limit production losses.

The built-in PLC enables drive-related applications to be completely implemented in the drive – including logical sequences, which are conventionally handled by a full-fledged machine controller. A case in point, another demo exhibit shows a dedicated drive for pump applications. This unit can detect blockages and independently attempt to resolve them by repeatedly changing the motor speed and direction. If this action successfully removes the blockage, the drive will resume normal operation, otherwise, it will submit an error message to a higher-level control system. In customer applications, additional measures could be initiated as well, e.g. by unlocking a bypass. Visitors are also invited to try a new approach and adjust the speed of an inverter-controlled geared motor with a mobile device via a wireless connection.
