Voith fluid couplings ensure reliable performance in Indonesia

Indonesian mining company Bukit Asam has expressed its satisfaction with the reliable performance of Voith fluid couplings installed at its Tanjung Enim Coal Mine in Sumatra. The mine operates 24 hours a day, seven days per week, so any equipment downtime leads to a loss of production. The TVVS fluid couplings, supplied by Turbo, a group division of Germany’s Voith GmbH, have been installed on belt conveyors at the site since 1997 without any unplanned downtime. TVVS couplings (rated between 55 to 500 kW) are used on 13 belt conveyors at the mine, which comprises two coal handling facilities. The longest belt conveyor is 4284 m long and has a capacity of 1700 tph. The drive on this conveyor includes 3 x 315 kW motors and three fluid couplings of the type 750 TVVS. Bucket wheel excavator drives at the site are also equipped with fluid couplings (5 x 750 kW Type T). These dampen vibrations and protect the driveline from damage in cases of overload.

No unplanned downtime since 1997. Tanjung Enim Coal Mine relies on TVVS constant-fill fluid couplings from Voith.

Voith couplings are suitable for use in extreme environments, and are insensitive to factors such as dust, dirt and humidity. For example, the fine coal dust at the Tanjung Enim Coal Mine does not hamper the performance of the fluid couplings.

The couplings also dampen torsional vibrations in the driveline and protect it against overload, which helps to increase the lifetime of the entire system. As torque is transmitted by a fluid, the power transmission of the fluid couplings is wear-free, allowing maintenance to be kept to a minimum.

Voith fluid couplings are well suited for use in extreme environments and are completely insensitive to harsh conditions like dust, dirt and humidity.

Bukit Asam’s Manager of Maintenance Planning, Kris Tjahajaning Tyas, has spoken of his appreciation for the advice and after-sales support provided by the local Voith team.

“We’re all very impressed with the performance of the TVVS constant-fill fluid couplings. They’re very easy to maintain – only oil changes are needed – and the reliability is just great,” said Tyas.
