The 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) and the 11th session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP 11) serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will be held in Paris in 30 November - 11 December 2015. At COP 21, it is expected that Parties will adopt a new universal climate agreement that would come into effect and be implemented from 2020.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) is involved in this event at many different levels:

  • AfDB acts as an Observer to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC): the Bank monitors the ongoing negotiations leading up to the adoption of a new agreement in Paris.
  • Bank's participation contributes to showcase Bank's climate change interventions in Africa.
  • At regional level, the Bank in coordination with the African Union Commission, the UN Economic Commission for Africa, the NEPAD Secretariat and other partners, is establishing an Africa Pavilion at COP 21 that will serve as an African hub and host of various African High Level Events and "Side Events" addressing themes of fundamental importance to Africa.

The AfDB delegation will take an active role in following up on the discussions that took place during the Ministerial Meeting on Climate Finance co-hosted by Peru and France at the World Bank and IMF Annual Meeting in Lima, Peru. President Akinwumi Adesina stated that controlling climate change is a non-negotiable priority. President Adesina also announced that the Bank will triple its climate financing to reach $5 billion annually by 2020.

The Bank will also seek to broaden the dialogue on the new corporate priorities (the President's High 5s), including the New Deal for Energy in Africa.
