World Cement,
Chairman of Eurocement’s Board of Directors Filaret Galchev has stressed the need for early adoption of technical regulations for the building materials market in the Customs Union (CU). The regulations would tackle the issue of increased imports of counterfeit and substandard building materials in CU countries.
According to Higher School of Economics research, counterfeit goods are estimated to account for around 5 – 10% of the worldwide market. In Russia this figure is 30 – 35%, and up to 40% for the bagged cement market. Furthermore, the volume of cement imports in the CU is currently around 6 million t, and these products are often subject to no safety standards.
With this in mind, Galchev has stressed the need to create conditions for the protection of building materials manufacturers by restoring the quality management system and coordinating draft technical regulations for the safety of buildings, building materials and products in the Customs Union as soon as possible. According to Galchev, this will create a level playing field for domestic manufacturers, introduce a new level of control over the market and prevent harm to both consumers and the construction industry as a whole.
