Cemex UK launches Technical Development Programme

Cemex UK has launched a new Technical Development Programme aimed at developing the technical managers of the future. An orientation day was held at the company’s National Technical Centre in Southam, Warwickshire, marking the start of the 18-month programme for six technicians.

Cemex developed the programme to enable it to extend and develop its own people over the coming years. The programme is developed to provide a comprehensive range of learning experiences. For one week of every month the technicians are taken out of their current role to work in different business areas, including aggregates, concrete, cement and building products, to gain valuable knowledge. As well as plenty of hands on experience, the trainees will also benefit from formal tuition as they embark on their journey towards becoming the next generation of Technical Managers.

“It has become increasingly difficult to recruit externally,” said Steve Crompton, National Technical Director. “We are not seeing as many engineering graduates and many of those within the industry who have specialist skills have moved out. The Technical Development Programme ensures that talented technicians learn not only the technical skills, but the management and people skills, that are so essential for our future technical managers.”

Nathan Kite, Aggregates and Asphalt Technician, who is taking part in the programme, said: “It’s a great opportunity; as well as tuition we will be investigating real issues and looking at ways to help improve the business.”

Gilbert Morgan, Readymix Plant and Field Technician, agreed: “I want to be able to develop my skills and knowledge of the business and this course will certainly provide this, as well as giving me an opportunity to develop and advance into management.”
