A TEC to install Flash Dryer for alternative fuels at Lafarge Cement Hungary plant

To reduce the moisture content of alternative fuel (RDF) for the kiln, Lafarge Cement Hungary Ltd. awarded A TEC a contract for the implementation of a new alternative fuel concept for the kiln front end of the kiln at Királyegyháza, near Pécs. It will consist of a system that enables the plant of feeding two parallel alternative fuel streams simultaneously; A TEC will provide its innovative Flash Dryer where material will be dried using residual hot gas from the Cl-bypass system and a satellite burner for firing of the material in the kiln. For the second RDF flow, firing in the kiln burner directly, a new alternative fuel receiving, handling, and dosing system will be part of A TEC’s project. The project will be commissioned in quarter 22021.

The Királyegyháza Cement Plant is one of the leading manufacturers of high-quality cement in Hungary, with a yearly capacity of more than 1 million t of cement. Lafarge believes that it can recycle 100 times more waste than produced during its operation. The company’s aim for 2050 is to reach the net zero emission rate.

Flash Dryer for alternative fuels

Reaching high thermal substitution rates (TSR) requires firing of alternative fuels at the kiln burner. To reach a stable sintering zone for the required clinker quality, a high fuel quality (high LCV, small particle size) is needed, otherwise the clinker quality may suffer or the TSR can be limited. With the A TEC Flash Dryer various waste heat sources can be used (clinker cooler flue gas, bypass gas, preheater gas, etc.). The material is dosed to the hot gas flow in the flash dryer and transported with this gas flow, while the moisture is evaporated, to a cyclone and a subsequent filter where the fuel is separated from the gas flow and on-line fed to a kiln burner or a satellite burner. In addition to the drying, the lifting effect of the gas can separate 3D impurities, contributing to a further improvement of the fuel quality.
