Cement prices up slightly in Med and Gulf regions

FOB prices for ordinary portland cement and clinker registered slight increases in the Mediterranean Basin and Persian Gulf-Arabian Sea regions in April, according to CW Group. East African CFR prices for bagged cement also remained stable.
“Cement exporters in the North of Africa region generally seem to be succeeding with their plans of becoming self-sufficient and starting to export,” said Ana Almeida, an analyst with CW Group’s European Team. “Players in Algeria and Egypt has been seeing an increase in their shipments and optimism remains.
“In the Eastern region of Africa, countries facing cement shortages represent a short-term opportunity for exporters,” continued Almeida. “This situation comes in a time when countries of the coast side of the region are becoming more competitive in the cement market.”
